The start
Tharsher magazine was founded in 1981 by Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello, basically they create thrasher magazine to promote their Independent Trucks brand and his riders. We can say that Thasher magazine is a marketing strategy of Independent Trucks. At the same time they open a business called “high speed productions” to print the thrasher magazine and also they release another magazine like Slap and Juxtapoz. Fausto Vitello died in 2006 and his wife Gwin went to be the president of High Speed Productions and his son went to be the president of Thrasher. Skateboard would not be the same without the magazine.
Jake Phelps
Jake was born in 1962 in San Francisco and moved to Boston. When he was 13 his mom gave him the first skateboard. In early 1980s he move back to San Francisco and start working in a skate store where he was added to AM team. In 1986 meet the owners of thrasher and asked him to work in thrasher magazine writing articles. In 1989 he becomes the shipping manager, in 1992 was the associate editor and 1993 becomes editor in chief and he was the voice of the brand. Over the years he was very close to fire for his controversial remarks. He spent a lot of time in hospitals due his injuries while he skateboard. Jake passed away in 2019 and was cremated with his skateboard.
Celebrities wearing Thrasher
Recently a tons of celebrities that they nothing with skateboarding culture they have been wearing thrasher clothes, for example Justin Bieber, Rihanna and more. When they asked to Jake Phelps about this, answer “we don´t send boxes to celebrities, the pavement is where the real shit is”. The hype of skateboarding even pushed to VOGUE magazine to do a skateboarding week and many skaters were very critical with this.

The font was designed by French Roger Excoffon and the typography is rip off by a lot of companies.
Thrasher videogame “skate and destroy”
The videogame is called “skate and destroy” and launched at the same time of Tony Hawk in 1999 with the collaboration of Z-Axis Ltd. It was more realistic than Tony hawk and therefore more harder to play but you can get arrested or broke your bones. A Game Boy Color version was also developed, but was later cancelled due to failure.
Snowboard cover
In 1998 they release a cover with rob robkopp, pro skater of Santa Cruz, inside we can found an article with seven pages about snowboarding. At the end of 1980s snowboarding was growing up very fast in the US, so snowboard industry follow the same path that skateboard took years before. In fact was not rare to see burton ads inside thrasher magazine. The last article about snowboarding in Thrasher magazine was in 1997 in an interview to Greg Goulet. In 1995 they also had a cover with a longboard and in the headline says “the cult of the longboard”.
Skaters banned from Thasher
Jake Phelps was known for banning people from the magazine that he didn´t like, sometime lifetime and sometimes in a short period. He banned Billy Pepper and he showed up in the office and punch Jake in his face. Daniel Howard was banned but get unbanned when he jump off from a helicopter.
Michael Burnett
Michael Burnett learn to shot his photos and he caught Jake Phelps and ended up writing articles for Thrasher. In the last 20 years in the first page of the magazine you are going to find his name under Jake Phelps name, which mean that Michael make the “dirty” jobs and Jake just approval the article.
Modern Success
A lot of people know the magazine as the skateboard bible. Is now the biggest and longest skateboard magazine and in 2011 report that they sell 250.000 copies and 1.5 millions visitor to website per month.
Skate Of The Year (SOTY)
SOTY is the best honor of skateboarding you can achieve since the first award was Tony Hawk in 1990. Nobody knows how they choose the winner, but rumors says that it was Jake Phelps who picked up. Only 2 people wins the SOTY twice, Danny Way (1991-2004) and Chris Cole (2005-2009).
Kind of the road
Transworld has the best videos of pro skateboards so Thrasher they launch in 2003 kind of the road, it is a 2 with trip around the US where skaters have to do some challenges in the different cities.
Hall of meet
Skaters start sending photos of his injuries and printed on the magazine, nowadays are videos that they shared on his website and instagram account.

Thrasher magazine has his own private indoor skatepark in San Francisco, called double rock. The park is invited only pro teams to take footage for his website and social media.
