Premise: A Visual Novel where you try to woo a guy who’s part of a secret fighting tournament after school. Also includes a couple mini-games where you help a guy train or help feel better.
Duel Love is more of a visual novel, not really a game. This makes things kind of tough because that means that there is a lot of reading to do and this game is completely in Japanese. It was never localized into English but I can guess why. When Duel Love first came out I remember there being some controversy over the game because most of the mini-games involve mostly nude boys.

Duel Love has six chapters and within each chapter you are basically trying to get closer to a boy hopefully to end up being his girlfriend. You can pick various dialogue choices and areas to go, when the game prompts you to, in order to hopefully run into the guy you’re trying to woo in order to advance the game. After chapter 3 or so the game primarily becomes all about the mini-games and you are basically stuck on some boy’s route. It’s basic and barebones but it makes the game very short and easy to breeze through. When not in a mini-game the game has an Auto-Read function that goes at a snail’s pace and a Skip button that let’s you skip through any text that you’ve already read before. When playing a mini-game you provided instructions before each game (such as blowing into the DS mic into clear away steam in order to see a guy naked). Speaking of the guys.

Character with Routes:
Jin Yuki: He’s the main character by virtue of being the first guy you that you have to heal no matter what route you’re on. He’s kind of boring and serious but warms up to you in the end.
Yuma Asakura: He is Jin’s close friend. Very casual yet can be hotblooded and my personal favorite. Maybe I have a thing for laid back redheads?
Shinichiro Nagao: He wears glasses and hangs out in the library. He’s also a bit on the serious side and is in the game for those that have a fetish for hot nerds.
Kei Ryuzoji: Long-haired, blond, and artsy bishounen. He’s kind of protective and that’s about it.
Tomohiko Tachibana: He’s the youngest looking guy and has self-esteem issues. I hated this character because he’s just so damn girly looking and doesn’t know how to tie a tie. And he is really skinny. I gagged a little at how twiggy his legs were during his after fight healing mini-games.

Masayoshi Date: The main bad guy that each character fights in the final chapter of their route. If you get the good ending for each of the five above guys you unlock his route which I thought was a lot of fun. But it goes by too quick since he doesn’t have any mini-games to himself.

In summary: Duel Love is a short game that doesn’t really stand out from other otome games. I used it primarily to help bone up on my Japanese. The game takes an interesting concept, a fight club, and manages to make it boring with its cliched characters. I can’t really recommend it unless you just want to use it as soft-core porn.
